“The Nutterswood Loop is a picturesque 10 km trail featuring scenic views, historical landmarks, and moderate challenges.”
Starting near the picturesque town of Gloucestershire, England, the Nutterswood Loop is a delightful 10 km (6.2 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: The Farmers Arms, a charming pub located at 1 Church Lane, Apperley, Gloucester GL19 4DQ. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Gloucester Railway Station and then a local bus to Apperley. The bus stop is conveniently located near the pub.
The Nutterswood Loop begins with a gentle ascent through a mixed woodland area, where you'll be greeted by the sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail are relatively easy, with a gradual elevation gain of about 50 meters (164 feet). This section is perfect for warming up your legs and getting into the rhythm of the hike.
As you continue, you'll come across the first significant landmark: an ancient oak tree estimated to be over 300 years old. This majestic tree stands as a testament to the area's rich natural history. Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, the trail opens up to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Severn Valley. This is an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views.
The trail then descends slightly into a meadow filled with wildflowers during the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The meadow is also home to several species of butterflies, making it a vibrant and colorful section of the hike.
Around the 6 km (3.7 miles) point, you'll encounter the ruins of an old stone cottage. This cottage dates back to the 18th century and offers a glimpse into the rural life of the past. It's a great spot for history enthusiasts to explore and take photos.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is highly recommended for this purpose, as it provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail can be muddy in sections, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are advisable. There are a few steep sections, particularly in the latter half of the trail, so trekking poles can be helpful for maintaining balance.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail take you through a dense forest area, where the canopy provides a cool and shaded environment. This section is relatively flat, making for a pleasant and easy finish to your hike. You'll eventually loop back to the starting point near The Farmers Arms, where you can reward yourself with a hearty meal and a refreshing drink.
The Nutterswood Loop offers a well-rounded hiking experience with its mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate challenges. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this trail provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the scenic countryside of Gloucestershire.
