“Embark on a scenic 9 km hike through charming villages, historic landmarks, and picturesque Cotswold countryside.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Lower Slaughter in Gloucestershire, England, this 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) loop trail offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical charm. The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car, with parking available near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Moreton-in-Marsh, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to Lower Slaughter.
The journey begins in Lower Slaughter, a village renowned for its idyllic setting along the River Eye. As you set off, you'll be greeted by the sight of charming stone cottages and the historic Old Mill, which dates back to the 19th century. The trail follows the Windrush Way, leading you through lush meadows and alongside the tranquil river.
After about 1.5 km (approximately 1 mile), you'll reach Upper Slaughter. This village is equally enchanting, with its medieval church of St. Peter and the Manor House, a fine example of Jacobean architecture. The gentle elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet) is spread out over the entire trail, making it a manageable climb for most hikers.
Upper Slaughter is a "doubly thankful" village, meaning it lost no men in either World War I or World War II. Take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere and the historical significance of this rare distinction. The village is also home to several ancient buildings, including the 12th-century St. Peter's Church, which is worth a visit.
As you loop back towards Lower Slaughter, the trail takes you through more scenic countryside, offering stunning views of the Cotswolds' rolling hills. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species and perhaps even a deer or two. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
The final leg of the hike brings you back to Lower Slaughter, where you can relax by the river or visit the Old Mill Museum. The entire loop takes around 2-3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and a touch of local wildlife, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
