Starting near the picturesque county of Gloucestershire, England, the Hazel Wood and Longtree Bottom Loop is a delightful 15 km (approximately 9.3 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: The Speech House Hotel, Speech House Rd, Coleford GL16 7EL, UK. There is ample parking available near the hotel. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Lydney, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins near the Speech House Hotel, a historic building dating back to the 17th century, originally used as a hunting lodge for Charles II. From here, the path leads you into Hazel Wood, a dense forest area rich in biodiversity. The initial 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail are relatively flat, making for a gentle start.
As you venture deeper into Hazel Wood, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna. The forest is home to ancient oak, beech, and hazel trees. During spring and summer, the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of species such as the great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, and various warblers.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you will come across the remains of an old charcoal burner’s hut, a nod to the area's industrial past. Charcoal burning was a significant activity in these woods during the 18th and 19th centuries, providing fuel for the local ironworks.
As you approach the halfway point, the trail descends into Longtree Bottom, a serene valley with a small stream running through it. This section of the trail is particularly scenic, with lush greenery and the gentle sound of flowing water providing a tranquil atmosphere. The elevation gain here is gradual, making it a pleasant walk.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time tracking. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, as some sections can be muddy, especially after rain.
Longtree Bottom is a haven for wildlife. Look out for deer, foxes, and badgers, which are commonly sighted in this area. If you're lucky, you might even spot a rare goshawk soaring above the treetops.
The final 5 km (3.1 miles) of the loop take you through a mix of open meadows and woodland paths. This section offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, particularly as you gain a bit of elevation. The trail eventually loops back to the starting point near the Speech House Hotel.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
