Key Sections and Landmarks

Woodland Path

The initial section of the trail winds through ancient woodlands, where you can expect to see a variety of native trees such as oak, beech, and birch. This area is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for the distinctive calls of the great spotted woodpecker.

Freeminers' Heritage

As you progress, you'll come across several remnants of the area's mining history. The Forest of Dean is known for its unique tradition of freemining, where local miners, known as freeminers, have had the right to mine for coal and iron ore since the 13th century. Look for old mine entrances and information boards that provide insight into this fascinating aspect of local heritage.

Scenic Viewpoints

Approximately halfway through the loop, the trail ascends to a higher elevation, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding forest and countryside. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. The elevation gain here is around 100 meters (328 feet) from the trailhead, making it a moderate climb.

Wildlife and Flora

The latter part of the trail takes you through more open areas where wildflowers bloom in abundance during the spring and summer months. This section is particularly rich in butterflies and other pollinators. You might also spot some of the forest's more elusive inhabitants, such as badgers and owls, especially if you are hiking early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked with clear signage, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. The HiiKER app is highly recommended for this purpose, as it provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course.

Final Stretch

The final stretch of the loop brings you back through a mix of woodland and open areas, gradually descending back towards the trailhead near the Speech House Hotel. This section is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down and reflect on the diverse landscapes and historical sites you've encountered along the way.
