Key Landmarks and Sections

Berkeley Castle

At the start, take a moment to appreciate Berkeley Castle, one of the most well-preserved castles in England. It has been the home of the Berkeley family for over 850 years and is famous for its role in the imprisonment of King Edward II.

Countryside and Farmland

As you leave the town, the trail takes you through lush farmland and open fields. This section is relatively flat, making it a leisurely walk. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as rabbits, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The fields are often dotted with grazing sheep and cows, adding to the pastoral charm.

Severn Estuary

Approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Severn Estuary. The estuary is a significant natural landmark, known for its tidal range, which is the second highest in the world. The views here are expansive, offering a glimpse of the Welsh coastline on clear days. This is a great spot for a break and some birdwatching; the estuary is home to numerous wading birds and waterfowl.

Breakwater

Continuing along the estuary, you'll come across the Breakwater, a man-made structure designed to protect the shoreline from erosion. This section of the trail is particularly scenic, with the estuary on one side and rolling fields on the other. The Breakwater is also a good spot for fishing, if you fancy a break.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time location tracking. The terrain is mostly flat, but be prepared for muddy sections, especially after rain. Good walking boots are recommended.
