The trail begins at the entrance of the Salary Brook Nature Reserve. As you start, you'll be greeted by a serene landscape of mixed woodlands and open meadows. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively flat, making for an easy warm-up. Keep an eye out for the diverse bird species that inhabit this area, including woodpeckers and kingfishers.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll come across remnants of ancient Roman roads. This area is steeped in history, as it was once a significant route during the Roman occupation of Britain. As you continue, the trail begins to ascend gently. By the time you reach the 5 km (3.1 miles) point, you'll have gained about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation. The next section of the trail takes you through dense woodlands. This part of the reserve is rich in flora, including ancient oak trees and vibrant wildflowers during the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for deer and other small mammals that are often seen in this area.
As you approach the final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop, the trail descends gradually. This section offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, especially during the autumn months when the foliage turns a brilliant array of colors. The descent will bring you back to the starting point, completing the loop.
