To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address, which is close to the village of Great Dunmow, Essex. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Mann Wood, where you will be greeted by a canopy of ancient oaks and beech trees. The initial 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail are relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more varied terrain ahead. As you progress, keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife, including woodpeckers and owls, which are commonly spotted in this area.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you will enter Hazelton Wood. This section of the trail is particularly scenic, with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. The undergrowth here is rich with ferns and wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. The trail meanders through the wood, offering occasional glimpses of the surrounding countryside.
