With no significant elevation gain, this trail is accessible to most hikers, though it is rated as medium difficulty due to some uneven terrain and potential muddy patches after rain.
To reach the trailhead, you can take a train to Robertsbridge Station, which is well-connected via the Southeastern Railway from London Charing Cross, Hastings, and other major stations. Starting from Robertsbridge, the trail meanders through picturesque landscapes, including open fields, woodlands, and charming rural settings. Early on, you’ll pass by the historic Robertsbridge Abbey, founded in 1176. Although now in ruins, the site offers a glimpse into the region's medieval past.
As you continue, keep an eye out for local wildlife. The area is home to a variety of bird species, including skylarks and kestrels, and you might spot deer grazing in the fields. The woodlands are rich with native flora, including bluebells in the spring and a variety of fungi in the autumn.
About halfway through the walk, you’ll come across the River Rother. This serene river is a great spot for a short break, and you might see swans and ducks gliding along the water. The trail then follows the river for a short distance before heading back into the countryside.
The region is steeped in history, with Robertsbridge itself being a site of historical interest. The village was a significant location during the medieval period, and remnants of its past can be seen in the architecture and layout of the area.
As you approach Etchingham, the trail takes you through more open fields and past quaint farmhouses. The walk ends near Etchingham Station, which, like Robertsbridge, is served by the Southeastern Railway, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue your journey.
This walk offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and rural charm, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
