The trail begins near the village center, where you can take a moment to admire the historic architecture and perhaps grab a bite at one of the local cafes. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the serene countryside, with rolling hills and lush meadows stretching out before you.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the ruins of Robertsbridge Abbey. Founded in 1176, this Cistercian abbey played a significant role in the region's medieval history. Although much of the abbey is in ruins, the remaining structures offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Take some time to explore the site and imagine the lives of the monks who once lived here.
Continuing along the trail, you'll enter the scenic Rother Valley. This section of the hike is particularly beautiful, with the River Rother meandering through the landscape. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including kingfishers, herons, and various species of ducks. The valley is also home to several ancient woodlands, where you might spot deer and other woodland creatures.
Around the halfway point, at approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), you'll have the option to take a short detour to visit Bodiam Castle.
