Starting from Offham, the trail initially takes you through the charming village before leading you to the Papermill Cut. This section of the trail is relatively flat and follows the course of an old mill stream. The Papermill Cut is historically significant as it was once part of the local paper-making industry, which thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries. As you walk along this path, you can still see remnants of the old mill structures, offering a glimpse into the area's industrial past.
After leaving the Papermill Cut, the trail begins to ascend towards Offham Hill. This is where you will gain most of the 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. The climb is steady but manageable, and the effort is well worth it. As you ascend, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views of the South Downs and the surrounding countryside. The hill is also a great spot for birdwatching, so keep an eye out for local species such as skylarks and kestrels.
One of the most interesting landmarks on this trail is the Offham Chalk Pit. This disused quarry is now a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The chalk pit is home to a variety of rare plants and insects, making it a fascinating stop for nature enthusiasts. The white chalk cliffs provide a stark contrast to the greenery, creating a unique and picturesque landscape.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Depending on the season, you might encounter wildflowers such as bluebells and primroses. The wooded areas are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The chalk grasslands on Offham Hill are particularly notable for their rare orchids and butterflies.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a half-day hike.
