The trail begins in Litlington, a quaint village known for its picturesque cottages and the Litlington White Horse, a chalk figure carved into the hillside. From here, the path takes you through a variety of landscapes, including rolling hills, dense woodlands, and open fields.
The initial section from Litlington to Exceat is approximately 8 km (5 miles) and involves a gradual ascent of about 100 meters (328 feet). As you leave Litlington, you'll pass through Friston Forest, a dense woodland area teeming with wildlife such as deer and various bird species. Keep an eye out for the diverse flora, including bluebells in the spring.
From Exceat, the trail continues for another 10 km (6.2 miles) towards Alfriston. This section includes a mix of flat and hilly terrain, with an elevation gain of around 150 meters (492 feet). Exceat is home to the Seven Sisters Country Park, where you can enjoy stunning views of the chalk cliffs and the meandering Cuckmere River. The village dates back to the Saxon era and features several historical landmarks, including the Alfriston Clergy House, the first property acquired by the National Trust. The village also boasts a charming market square and the St. Andrew's Church, known as the "Cathedral of the Downs."
The final leg of the journey from Alfriston back to Litlington is about 7 km (4.3 miles) with a gentle descent of around 150 meters (492 feet). This section takes you through open fields and along the banks of the River Cuckmere, offering serene views and a peaceful end to your hike.
