The trailhead is conveniently located near the Isfield Farm Shop, a great spot to grab some local produce or a snack before you set off.
For those traveling by public transport, the nearest train station is Uckfield, which is about 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From Uckfield, you can take a local bus or a taxi to reach Isfield. If you're driving, there is parking available near the Isfield Farm Shop.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The loop takes you through a variety of landscapes, including open fields, woodlands, and along the banks of the River Ouse.
Isfield Lock and River Ouse: About 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the historic Isfield Lock on the River Ouse. This lock is part of the old Sussex Ouse Navigation, which was used for transporting goods in the 18th and 19th centuries. It's a picturesque spot, perfect for a short break and some photos.
Lavender Line Railway: Approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) into the walk, you'll pass near the Lavender Line, a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel trains. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a vintage train chugging along the tracks.
The trail offers a rich tapestry of local flora and fauna. In the spring and summer months, the fields are often dotted with wildflowers, and you might spot butterflies and bees busily at work. The woodlands provide a habitat for various bird species, so keep your eyes and ears open for the sounds of nature.
Isfield itself is steeped in history. The village dates back to the Domesday Book and has several historical buildings, including the St. Margaret's Church, which you can visit before or after your hike. The church has elements dating back to the 12th century and is a fascinating glimpse into the area's past.
This trail offers a wonderful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
