To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Eastbourne, East Sussex, and park near the Eastbourne Pier, which is a well-known landmark. For those using public transport, take a train to Eastbourne Station and then a local bus or taxi to the pier.
The trail begins near Eastbourne Pier, a Victorian-era structure that has been a focal point of the town since 1870. From here, you will follow the England Coast Path, which offers stunning views of the English Channel. The path is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on track.
The initial stretch from Eastbourne Pier to Beachy Head is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) with a gradual ascent. Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, standing at 162 meters (531 feet) above sea level. The views from here are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the coastline and the sea.
Continuing from Beachy Head, the trail leads you towards Brass Point, another 3 km (1.9 miles) stretch. This section is relatively flat and allows you to enjoy the coastal flora and fauna. Look out for seabirds like kittiwakes and fulmars, which nest along the cliffs.
From Brass Point, the trail heads towards Cliff End, covering another 3 km (1.9 miles). This part of the hike includes a mix of gentle ascents and descents. Cliff End offers another vantage point with spectacular views of the coastline. The area is rich in history, with remnants of World War II bunkers and fortifications visible along the path.
The final leg of the journey takes you back to Eastbourne Pier, approximately 3 km (1.9 miles). This section is mostly downhill, making for a pleasant end to your hike. As you approach Eastbourne, you’ll pass through meadows and woodlands, offering a different but equally beautiful landscape.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife. Besides seabirds, you may encounter rabbits, foxes, and even the occasional deer. The coastal vegetation includes wildflowers like sea thrift and gorse, which bloom in vibrant colors during the spring and summer months.
The region is steeped in history. Eastbourne itself has been a popular seaside resort since the Victorian era. Beachy Head has historical significance dating back to the Napoleonic Wars, and the remnants of World War II fortifications add a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.
Given the medium difficulty rating, it's essential to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water. Weather can change rapidly along the coast, so pack a waterproof jacket and check the forecast before setting out. Using HiiKER for navigation will help you stay on the correct path and make the most of your hike.
