Trail Overview

The trail begins in Hedon, a town with a rich history dating back to the medieval period. As you set off, you'll pass by the impressive St. Augustine's Church, often referred to as the "King of Holderness" due to its grand architecture. This church is a significant landmark and a great spot for a quick photo before you start your hike.

Nature and Wildlife

As you leave Hedon, the trail meanders through open fields and farmland. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species such as skylarks and lapwings. The flat terrain makes it easy to spot these creatures, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

Key Landmarks

Around the 5 km (3 miles) mark, you'll come across the village of Paull. Here, you can take a short detour to visit the Paull Holme Tower, a 15th-century fortified house that offers a glimpse into the area's feudal past. Continuing on, the trail takes you along the banks of the Humber Estuary, providing stunning views of the water and the distant Humber Bridge.

Historical Significance

The region is steeped in history, from its medieval roots in Hedon to the industrial heritage visible along the Humber Estuary. The estuary itself has been a crucial waterway for centuries, facilitating trade and transport. As you walk, you'll notice remnants of old docks and warehouses, now mostly reclaimed by nature.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's length and the potential for variable weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide extra assurance. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route.

Final Stretch

The final leg of the loop brings you to Thorngumbald, a quaint village where you can take a well-deserved rest. From here, the trail loops back towards Hedon, passing through more picturesque countryside. The return journey offers a different perspective, with the changing light and scenery providing a fresh experience.

This 18 km loop is a rewarding hike that combines natural beauty with historical depth, making it a must-do for anyone visiting East Riding of Yorkshire.
