“Experience lush forests, panoramic vistas, and historical landmarks on Dorset's rewarding 7 km Langdon and Hardown Hills loop.”
Starting near Dorset, England, this 7 km (4.3 miles) loop trail offers a moderate hiking experience with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Morcombelake, which can be accessed by car or public transport. If driving, you can park at the National Trust car park at Langdon Hill, just off the A35. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Morcombelake, serviced by local buses from Bridport and Lyme Regis.
The hike begins with a gentle ascent through Langdon Hill, a wooded area managed by the National Trust. The forest is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, providing a lush canopy that offers shade and a cool environment, especially during the summer months. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers and owls. The first 1.5 km (0.9 miles) of the trail is relatively easy, with a gradual incline that makes for a pleasant start.
As you continue, the trail leads you to Hardown Hill, which offers more open terrain and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section involves a steeper climb, adding about 100 meters (328 feet) to your elevation gain over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). The hill is covered in heathland, home to various wildflowers and insects, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its geological significance.
The trail then takes you to the Earl of Antrim Memorial, a significant historical landmark dedicated to Hugh Seymour, the 6th Marquess of Hertford. The memorial is situated at the highest point of the trail, offering a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the views. This area is rich in history, with the memorial itself being a testament to the region's heritage. The next 1 km (0.6 miles) involves a descent, so take care as the path can be uneven.
The final stretch of the loop brings you back through a mix of woodland and open fields, gradually descending back to the starting point. This section is about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) and is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down and reflect on the hike. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
To reach the trailhead, if you're driving, take the A35 and look for signs to the National Trust car park at Langdon Hill. For public transport users, local buses from Bridport and Lyme Regis stop at Morcombelake, from where it's a short walk to the trailhead. The nearest significant landmark is the Felicity's Farm Shop, a great place to stock up on supplies before you start your hike.
