The trail begins near the Anchor Inn in Seatown, where you can enjoy a hearty meal before or after your hike. As you set off, the path initially takes you through lush meadows and gently rolling hills. The first section is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike while taking in the serene countryside.
After approximately 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail starts to ascend towards Golden Cap, the highest point on England's south coast. The climb is steady but manageable, with well-maintained paths and occasional steps to assist with the steeper sections. As you ascend, the views become increasingly breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you will reach the summit of Golden Cap, standing at 191 meters (627 feet) above sea level. From here, you can enjoy unparalleled views of the coastline stretching from Portland Bill to Start Point. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Isle of Wight. This is an excellent spot for a rest and some photography.
The descent from Golden Cap is gradual and takes you through a mix of open fields and wooded areas. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species and, if you're lucky, a glimpse of deer. The trail loops back towards Seatown, passing through charming countryside and offering occasional sea views.
Golden Cap and the surrounding area are steeped in history. The Jurassic Coast is famous for its geological significance, with rock formations dating back over 185 million years. Fossils are commonly found in the area, making it a fascinating destination for amateur geologists and history enthusiasts alike.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and ensure you stay on track.
As you approach the final stretch of the loop, you'll return to Seatown, where you can relax and reflect on your hike. The Anchor Inn offers a cozy atmosphere and a selection of local ales, perfect for unwinding after your adventure.
