“Explore the stunning Cerne Abbas to Plush Loop, a 20 km trail rich in history and natural beauty.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Cerne Abbas in Dorset, England, the Cerne Abbas to Plush Loop Walk spans approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Cerne Abbas, which is well-signposted from major roads in Dorset. If using public transport, the nearest train station is in Dorchester, about 13 km (8 miles) away. From Dorchester, you can take a bus or taxi to Cerne Abbas.
One of the first significant landmarks you'll encounter is the Cerne Abbas Giant, a massive chalk figure carved into the hillside. This ancient figure is believed to date back to the late Saxon period and is a symbol of fertility. The giant is located just outside the village, and a viewing area provides a perfect spot for photos and a brief rest.
As you continue, the trail meanders through quintessential English countryside, characterized by rolling hills, lush meadows, and charming hedgerows. The path is well-marked but having a navigation tool like HiiKER can be beneficial for staying on track.
The area is rich in wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species such as skylarks and kestrels. The flora is equally diverse, with wildflowers like bluebells and primroses carpeting the ground in spring and summer.
At around the halfway mark, you'll reach the village of Plush. This quaint village offers a perfect spot for a break. The local pub, The Brace of Pheasants, is renowned for its hospitality and traditional English fare. Plush is also a good place to refill water bottles and restock any supplies.
The trail features a mix of terrains, including woodland paths, open fields, and some steep inclines. The most significant elevation gain occurs in the first half of the hike, with a gradual ascent leading up to the highest point near Lyscombe Hill. From here, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Dorset countryside.
The region is steeped in history, from the ancient Cerne Abbas Giant to the medieval churches and cottages that dot the landscape. Cerne Abbas itself was once home to a Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 10th century, remnants of which can still be seen today.
The return leg of the loop takes you through more serene landscapes, including the tranquil Minterne Magna gardens, known for their stunning rhododendrons and azaleas. The path eventually leads back to Cerne Abbas, completing the loop.
This trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake it.
