River Bovey

As you continue, the trail will lead you alongside the River Bovey. This section is particularly serene, with the gentle sounds of flowing water and the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as kingfishers and otters. This riverside stretch lasts for about 2 km (1.2 miles).

Nature and Wildlife

Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll encounter Hisley Bridge, a charming stone bridge that dates back to the 17th century. This is a great spot for a rest and some photos.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time location tracking. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

Elevation Gain

The trail includes several moderate climbs, with the most significant ascent occurring around the 6 km (3.7 miles) point. Here, you'll gain approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation over a relatively short distance, offering rewarding views of the surrounding countryside.

Historical Significance

The area around Lustleigh has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Iron Age. The village itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and many of the buildings you pass have historical plaques detailing their significance.

Final Stretch

The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail bring you back towards Lustleigh, passing through more open fields and offering panoramic views of Dartmoor in the distance. This section is relatively flat, allowing for a leisurely end to your hike.
