“Immerse yourself in Devon's natural beauty and history on this 8 km scenic, medium-difficulty trail.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Devon, England, the Wester Wood and Horner's Neck Wood trail offers an 8 km (approximately 5 miles) loop with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (1,312 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and historical richness of the area.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the village of Devon, where parking is available near the local pub, The Devonshire Arms. For those using public transport, take a train to Exeter St Davids and then a local bus to Devon village. The bus stop is conveniently located near the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Wester Wood, a dense forest known for its ancient oak and beech trees. As you hike, you'll notice the forest floor carpeted with bluebells in the spring, creating a stunning visual contrast against the greenery. About 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, the trail starts to climb more steeply, gaining approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation over the next 2 km (1.2 miles).
As you ascend, you'll come across remnants of old stone walls and foundations, evidence of medieval settlements that once thrived in this region. These ruins offer a glimpse into the area's rich history, dating back to the 12th century. Keep an eye out for informational plaques that provide context and historical details.
The trail is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Deer are commonly spotted in the early mornings, and birdwatchers will delight in the variety of species, including woodpeckers, owls, and various songbirds. The flora is equally diverse, with ferns, wild garlic, and various fungi adding to the trail's natural beauty.
Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll transition into Horner's Neck Wood. This section of the trail is characterized by its rugged terrain and rocky outcrops. The elevation gain here is more gradual, adding another 100 meters (328 feet) over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). The wood is named after the Horner family, who were prominent landowners in the 17th century. Look out for the Horner's Stone, a large, flat rock with inscriptions dating back to this period.
As you near the highest point of the trail, approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) in, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Devon countryside. This is an excellent spot to take a break, enjoy a packed lunch, and soak in the scenery. Benches are available at this viewpoint, making it a comfortable resting spot.
The final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail involve a gradual descent back into Wester Wood, eventually looping back to the starting point. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene environment and perhaps spot some of the local wildlife one last time.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for hikers exploring the Devon area.
