Trail Overview

The loop begins at Saunton Sands, a vast expanse of golden beach backed by the impressive Braunton Burrows, one of the largest sand dune systems in the UK. As you set off, you'll be treated to stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged coastline.

Saunton to Putsborough

The first section of the trail takes you along the beach towards Putsborough. This stretch is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the sound of the waves and the fresh sea breeze. Keep an eye out for a variety of seabirds, including gulls and oystercatchers, which are common in this area. After approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), you'll reach Putsborough, a small hamlet known for its beautiful beach and surf-friendly waves.

Putsborough to Woolacombe

From Putsborough, the trail ascends gently through rolling dunes and coastal paths towards Woolacombe. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and offers panoramic views of the coastline. Woolacombe itself is a popular seaside resort with a long, sandy beach that has been awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness and facilities. Take a moment to explore the village, perhaps stopping for a refreshment at one of the local cafes.

Woolacombe to Saunton

The final leg of the loop takes you back towards Saunton, covering approximately 9 km (5.6 miles). This part of the trail includes a mix of coastal paths and inland routes, offering a variety of landscapes. You'll pass through the scenic Morte Point, a rocky headland known for its dramatic cliffs and historical shipwrecks. The elevation gain is more noticeable here, with some steeper sections that will challenge your legs but reward you with breathtaking views.

Historical Significance

The area around Saunton and Woolacombe is steeped in history. Braunton Burrows, for instance, was used as a training ground for the D-Day landings during World War II. As you hike, you may come across remnants of this period, including concrete bunkers and other military structures. The region is also rich in maritime history, with numerous shipwrecks off the coast, some of which date back to the 18th century.

Navigation and Safety

Given the varied terrain and coastal paths, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The app provides detailed maps and real-time updates, ensuring you won't miss any important turns or landmarks. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as coastal conditions can change rapidly. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first aid kit, and wear appropriate footwear for mixed terrain.
