“Experience Dartmoor's diverse landscape, historical sites, and wildlife on this rewarding 23-kilometer loop hike.”
Starting your hike near Devon, England, this loop trail spans approximately 23 kilometers (14.3 miles) with an elevation gain of around 700 meters (2,297 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car or public transport. If driving, you can park near the Haytor Vale car park, which is a well-known starting point for many Dartmoor hikes. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Bovey Tracey, from where you can catch a local taxi or walk to the trailhead.
The first significant landmark you'll encounter is Saddle Tor, located about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from the trailhead. The ascent to Saddle Tor is gradual, making it a good warm-up for the rest of the hike. The tor itself is a granite outcrop offering panoramic views of the surrounding moorland. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies grazing in this area; they are a common sight and add to the charm of the landscape.
Continuing on, you'll reach Top Tor after another 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). This section of the trail involves a moderate climb, gaining approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. Top Tor is another granite formation, and from here, you can see the rolling hills of Dartmoor stretching out in all directions. The area is rich in flora, including heather and gorse, which bloom vibrantly in late summer.
Around the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) mark, you'll come across Jay's Grave, one of Dartmoor's most poignant historical sites. The grave is said to belong to a young woman named Kitty Jay, who, according to local legend, took her own life in the late 18th century. Fresh flowers mysteriously appear on her grave daily, a tradition that has been maintained for generations. This site is a somber reminder of the area's rich folklore and history.
The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on track. The terrain varies from rocky paths to grassy moorland, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof gear.
Dartmoor is home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, foxes, and numerous bird species like skylarks and buzzards. The moorland is also a haven for botanists, with rare plants such as the bog orchid and sundew found in the wetter areas.
The return loop takes you back towards the starting point, passing through a mix of open moorland and wooded areas. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without too much exertion. You'll eventually circle back to the Haytor Vale car park, completing the loop.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
