Trail Overview

The trail begins in Michelcombe, a quaint village that offers a glimpse into traditional Devon life. As you set off, you'll traverse through lush meadows and ancient woodlands, gradually ascending towards the higher moorlands. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.

Significant Landmarks and Nature

Around 5 km (3 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the historic Hound Tor, a granite outcrop that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This area is steeped in legend, often associated with the tales of the Hound of the Baskervilles. The tor itself is a popular spot for rock climbing and bouldering, so you might see some climbers tackling its rugged surfaces.

Continuing on, you'll pass through the enchanting Becka Brook Valley. This section is particularly scenic, with the brook meandering through a dense canopy of trees. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The valley is also home to several ancient stone circles and burial mounds, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your hike.

Elevation Gain and Terrain

As you approach the halfway mark, the trail begins to climb more steeply. The ascent towards Haytor Rocks is the most challenging part of the hike, with an elevation gain of about 300 meters (approximately 984 feet) over a distance of 4 km (2.5 miles). The path here is rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. Trekking poles can also be helpful for maintaining balance on the steeper sections.

Historical Significance

Haytor Rocks, your final destination, is not only a natural marvel but also a site of historical importance. In the 19th century, granite from Haytor was transported via the Haytor Granite Tramway to the Stover Canal, and then on to Teignmouth for shipping. Remnants of the tramway can still be seen today, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area's industrial past.

Navigation and Safety

Given the varied terrain and potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide extra assurance, especially in foggy or rainy conditions.

Final Stretch

The final stretch of the trail descends gently into Haytor Vale, a small hamlet that serves as a perfect endpoint for your hike. Here, you can find a few local pubs and cafes where you can relax and refuel before heading back.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore the natural and historical richness of Devon, this trail offers a rewarding experience that combines physical challenge with the beauty of the English countryside.
