“Explore Devon's beauty and history on the 9 km Meldon Reservoir and Two Castles Trail loop.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Meldon in Devon, England, the Meldon Reservoir and Two Castles Trail offers a delightful 9 km (5.6 miles) loop with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to explore the natural beauty and historical richness of the area.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Meldon Reservoir, which is well-signposted from the A30. There is a car park available near the reservoir. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is Okehampton, about 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From Okehampton, you can take a taxi or a local bus to Meldon.
The trail begins at the Meldon Reservoir car park, where you can take a moment to appreciate the serene waters and surrounding landscape. As you start your hike, you'll follow a well-marked path that takes you along the reservoir's edge. This initial section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.
Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Meldon Viaduct, an impressive iron structure that dates back to the 19th century. This viaduct was once part of the London and South Western Railway and offers stunning views of the West Okement River below. Take a moment to admire the engineering marvel before continuing on your journey.
As you proceed, the trail begins to ascend towards High Willhays, the highest point on Dartmoor at 621 meters (2,037 feet). This section is more strenuous, with a steady climb that will test your endurance. The effort is well worth it, as the summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding moorland and beyond. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies, a native breed that roams freely in this area.
After descending from High Willhays, you'll join the Two Castles Trail, which connects the historic castles of Okehampton and Launceston. This part of the hike is relatively easier, with gentle undulations and well-defined paths. The trail meanders through lush woodlands and open fields, offering a diverse range of flora and fauna. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of species that inhabit this area, including buzzards and skylarks.
Around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark, you'll reach Okehampton Castle, a medieval ruin that dates back to the Norman Conquest. The castle, perched on a wooded spur above the River Okement, was once one of the largest castles in Devon. Take some time to explore the ruins and learn about its history through the informative plaques scattered around the site.
The final stretch of the trail takes you back towards Meldon Reservoir, completing the loop. This section is mostly downhill, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely walk back to the starting point. As you approach the reservoir, you'll be treated to more scenic views, making for a perfect end to your hike.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Ensure you have appropriate footwear, as some sections can be muddy and uneven. Carry sufficient water and snacks, especially if you plan to take breaks at the various landmarks.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring Devon.
