“Explore the scenic Invention Wood and Heddon's Mouth trail for a blend of nature and history in North Devon.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Trentishoe in Devon, England, the Invention Wood and Heddon's Mouth trail is a delightful 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) loop that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This trail is perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of the North Devon coast.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Trentishoe, where limited parking is available. If you prefer public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Barnstaple. From Barnstaple, you can take a bus to Combe Martin and then a taxi to Trentishoe, which is about a 15-minute drive away.
The trail begins in the serene woodlands of Invention Wood, where you'll be greeted by a canopy of ancient trees and the soothing sounds of birdsong. As you make your way through the forest, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, making it an excellent warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.
At approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll start to ascend towards the ridge that offers stunning views of the Bristol Channel. The climb is gradual but steady, gaining about 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the next kilometer. As you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views of the coastline and the rolling hills of Exmoor National Park.
The trail then descends towards Heddon's Mouth, a secluded cove where the River Heddon meets the sea. This part of the trail is particularly scenic, with dramatic cliffs and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks. The descent is steep in places, so take care and use trekking poles if you have them. Heddon's Mouth is an excellent spot for a break, where you can enjoy a picnic and perhaps even dip your toes in the water.
The area around Heddon's Mouth has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Iron Age. The cliffs and coves were once frequented by smugglers, and you can still see remnants of old smuggling routes and hideouts. The nearby Heddon's Mouth Cleave is also of geological interest, showcasing unique rock formations that have been shaped by centuries of erosion.
After exploring Heddon's Mouth, the trail loops back through the valley, following the course of the River Heddon. This section is relatively flat and offers a peaceful walk through lush greenery and alongside the babbling river. You'll eventually re-enter Invention Wood, completing the loop back to the trailhead.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially in the more remote sections.
Throughout the hike, you'll have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. The diverse plant life ranges from ancient oaks and beeches in the woodlands to coastal flora near Heddon's Mouth.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring the Devon area.
