Trail Overview

The trail begins in Branscombe, a village known for its charming thatched cottages and historic buildings. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the natural beauty of the Devon coastline. The first section of the trail takes you through lush, green fields and past ancient hedgerows, offering a gentle ascent.

Hooken Cliffs

Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Hooken Cliffs. These dramatic chalk cliffs provide stunning views of the English Channel and the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cliffs are home to a variety of seabirds, so keep an eye out for species like the fulmar and kittiwake. The path along the cliffs can be narrow and uneven, so take care and ensure you have sturdy footwear.

Hooken Landslide

Continuing along the cliffs, you'll come across the Hooken Landslide, a significant geological feature that occurred in 1790. This landslide created a unique landscape of chalk pinnacles and deep gullies. The area is a haven for wildlife, including butterflies and wildflowers, particularly in the spring and summer months.

Descent to the Beach

After exploring the cliffs, the trail descends steeply towards the beach. This section can be challenging due to loose rocks and uneven terrain, so take your time. Once you reach the beach, you'll be rewarded with a serene and secluded stretch of coastline. The beach is a great spot for a break, where you can enjoy a picnic or simply take in the views.

Return Loop

From the beach, the trail loops back towards Branscombe. The return journey takes you through a mix of coastal paths and woodland trails. You'll pass through the Hooken Undercliff, a sheltered area that supports a diverse range of plant life, including ferns and mosses. The final stretch of the trail brings you back to Branscombe, where you can explore the village further or enjoy a meal at one of the local pubs.

Navigation and Safety

For navigation, it's recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will ensure you stay on track. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as coastal conditions can change rapidly.

Historical Significance

Branscombe itself is steeped in history, with landmarks such as the Old Bakery, Manor Mill, and the St. Winifred's Church, which dates back to the 12th century. The village and surrounding areas have a rich heritage, reflecting the agricultural and maritime history of Devon.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, geological wonders, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
