“This 9 km loop trail from Challaborough Beach blends coastal views, historical landmarks, and moderate hiking challenges.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Challaborough in Devon, England, this 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of coastal scenery, rolling hills, and historical landmarks. With an elevation gain of around 300 meters (approximately 984 feet), the trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Challaborough Beach, where parking is available. If you prefer public transport, the nearest major town is Kingsbridge. From Kingsbridge, you can take a local bus to Challaborough, which is well-connected by the regional bus network.
The trail begins at Challaborough Beach, a sandy cove known for its stunning views and clear waters. As you start your hike, you'll head west along the South West Coast Path, which offers breathtaking coastal vistas. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Bigbury-on-Sea. This area is famous for Burgh Island, a tidal island that can be accessed by foot during low tide or by sea tractor during high tide. The island is home to the Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel, which has hosted famous guests like Agatha Christie. Take a moment to enjoy the views and perhaps explore the island if the tide permits.
Leaving Bigbury-on-Sea, the trail begins to ascend towards Bigbury Green. This section is more strenuous, with a steady climb that gains about 150 meters (492 feet) over the next 3 km (1.9 miles). The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the South Devon coastline and the rolling countryside. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species and, if you're lucky, the occasional deer.
As you approach Bigbury Green, you'll pass by remnants of ancient settlements and agricultural terraces, offering a glimpse into the area's rich history. The region has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and you may spot some old stone walls and field boundaries that date back centuries.
The final leg of the loop takes you through lush meadows and farmland, gradually descending back towards Challaborough Beach. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and is less demanding, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscape. The trail eventually loops back to the starting point at Challaborough Beach, where you can relax and perhaps take a dip in the sea.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for hikers exploring the Devon region.
