“Experience the Peak District's natural beauty and historical richness on the rewarding Tom Hyett, Mam Tor Loop.”
Starting your hike near the picturesque village of Edale in Derbyshire, England, the Tom Hyett, Mam Tor Loop offers a rewarding 10 km (6.2 miles) journey with an elevation gain of approximately 400 meters (1,312 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Edale, which is well-signposted from major roads in the region. There is a car park near the village where you can leave your vehicle. For those using public transport, Edale is accessible via train from Manchester and Sheffield, with the Edale train station being just a short walk from the trailhead.
The trail begins in Edale, a charming village known for its traditional stone cottages and welcoming pubs. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the natural beauty of the Peak District National Park. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you walk through lush meadows and past babbling brooks.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you will begin the ascent to Mam Tor, also known as the "Shivering Mountain." This part of the trail is more challenging, with a steady climb that will test your endurance. The path is well-trodden but can be slippery in wet conditions, so good hiking boots are essential. As you climb, take a moment to appreciate the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills.
Reaching the summit of Mam Tor at approximately 517 meters (1,696 feet) above sea level, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Manchester to the west and the Hope Valley to the east. The summit is marked by a trig point, a popular spot for photos. Mam Tor is also of historical significance, with evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age hill forts in the area.
From Mam Tor, the trail follows a scenic ridge line, offering continuous views of the Peak District's rolling landscapes. This section is relatively flat and allows for a more leisurely pace. After about 2 km (1.2 miles) along the ridge, you'll begin your descent back towards Edale. The path here is well-defined but can be rocky, so watch your footing.
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna that call this region home. You may spot red deer, hares, and a variety of bird species, including skylarks and kestrels. The area is also rich in wildflowers, particularly in the spring and summer months.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
As you make your way back to Edale, you'll pass through more pastoral landscapes, with stone walls and grazing sheep adding to the idyllic scenery. The final stretch of the trail is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down as you approach the village.
Upon returning to Edale, consider stopping by one of the local pubs or cafes to relax and reflect on your hike. The Old Nag's Head and The Rambler Inn are popular choices, offering hearty meals and refreshing drinks.
This loop trail not only provides a satisfying physical challenge but also immerses you in the natural and historical richness of the Peak District.
