Trail Highlights

As you embark on the Stanton Moor Plantation Circular Walk, you'll first encounter the enchanting Stanton Moor, a heather-clad upland area known for its archaeological significance. The moor is dotted with ancient stone circles, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a Bronze Age site that is approximately 4,000 years old. This circle, located about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, is a must-see for history enthusiasts.

Flora and Fauna

The trail meanders through a mix of open moorland and dense woodland, offering a diverse range of flora and fauna. In the spring and summer months, the moorland is awash with vibrant heather and wildflowers, attracting a variety of butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including skylarks and kestrels.

Midway Point

Around the 3.5 km (2.2 miles) mark, you'll come across the Earl Grey Tower, a 19th-century folly built in honor of the Prime Minister who passed the Reform Act of 1832. This tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is an excellent spot for a rest and a photo opportunity.

Navigation and Terrain

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain varies from well-trodden paths to rocky sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. There are a few gentle inclines, but nothing too strenuous, making it accessible for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness.

Final Stretch

As you loop back towards Birchover, the trail takes you through Stanton Moor Plantation, a serene woodland area that provides a cool, shaded respite on warmer days. The final stretch of the hike is relatively flat and easy, allowing you to enjoy the tranquil surroundings before returning to the village.

Historical Significance

Stanton Moor is not only a natural gem but also a site of considerable historical importance. In addition to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, the area is home to several other prehistoric monuments, including burial mounds and standing stones.
