Out and Back
“Ideal for families and beginners, the Peak Cavern Walk offers scenic views and historical intrigue in Derbyshire.”
Starting near Derbyshire, England, the Peak Cavern Walk is a short and easy out-and-back trail that spans approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) with no significant elevation gain. This makes it an ideal hike for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a leisurely stroll through a picturesque part of the English countryside.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If you're driving, set your GPS to Castleton, Derbyshire. There are several parking options available in the village. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Hope (Derbyshire), which is about 3 miles (4.8 km) away from Castleton. From Hope, you can catch a local bus or take a taxi to Castleton.
The trail begins near the entrance to Peak Cavern, also known as the "Devil's Arse," a name derived from the flatulent-sounding noises the cave used to make when water levels were high. The cavern is one of the four show caves in Castleton and is steeped in history, having been used as a hideout by bandits and a place for rope-making in the past.
The region around Castleton is rich in history. The village itself dates back to the 11th century and is home to Peveril Castle, a Norman fortification that overlooks the village. While the castle is not on the trail, it's worth a visit if you have extra time.
Given the short distance and straightforward nature of the trail, navigation is relatively simple. However, for those who prefer to have a digital map, the HiiKER app provides detailed maps and can help ensure you stay on the right path.
This easy and scenic walk offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for anyone in the Derbyshire area.
