“Explore Derbyshire's scenic beauty and rich history on the moderate Palmerston Wood and River Lathkill trail.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Youlgreave in Derbyshire, England, the Palmerston Wood and River Lathkill trail offers a delightful 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Youlgreave, which is accessible via the A6 road from Bakewell. There is limited parking available in the village, so arriving early is advisable. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Matlock, from where you can take a bus to Youlgreave. The bus service is relatively frequent, but it's always a good idea to check the latest schedules.
The trail begins near the village church of All Saints in Youlgreave, a historical landmark dating back to the 12th century. From here, you will head westward towards Palmerston Wood. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, meandering through open fields and offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
At approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you will enter Palmerston Wood. This ancient woodland is home to a variety of native tree species, including oak, ash, and beech. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The trail through the wood is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
Emerging from Palmerston Wood, you will descend towards the River Lathkill at around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark. The river is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique limestone geology and diverse aquatic life. The riverbanks are lined with wildflowers in the spring and summer, making it a perfect spot for a short rest and some nature photography.
The River Lathkill valley has a rich history, particularly related to lead mining, which dates back to Roman times. As you follow the river upstream, you may notice remnants of old mine workings and stone structures. Informational plaques along the trail provide insights into the area's mining heritage.
The trail continues along the river for another kilometer (0.6 miles) before reaching a natural turnaround point near the Lathkill Dale Nature Reserve. Here, you can take a moment to enjoy the serene landscape before retracing your steps back to Youlgreave. The return journey offers a different perspective of the scenery, with gentle ascents that bring you back through Palmerston Wood and the open fields.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the correct path. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding outing for those looking to explore the Derbyshire countryside.
