“Embark on a scenic 13 km adventure through Castleton's peaks, blending natural beauty, history, and moderate challenge.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Castleton in Derbyshire, England, the Mam Tor, Barker Bank, and Lose Hill Loop is a captivating 13 km (8 miles) journey with an elevation gain of approximately 400 meters (1,312 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Castleton, where parking is available at the Castleton Visitor Centre. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Hope Station, which is about 2 miles (3.2 km) from Castleton. From Hope Station, you can either walk or take a local bus to Castleton.
The trail begins near the Castleton Visitor Centre, where you can gather any last-minute supplies or information. As you set off, you'll first encounter the ascent to Mam Tor, also known as the "Shivering Mountain." This part of the trail is well-marked and offers a steady climb, gaining approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles).
Mam Tor stands at 517 meters (1,696 feet) and provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Peak District. The summit is marked by a trig point, and on a clear day, you can see as far as Manchester and the Cheshire Plain. The area is rich in history, with evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements. Be cautious of the weather, as it can change rapidly, and the wind can be quite strong at the summit.
From Mam Tor, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Barker Bank. This section is less steep but offers equally impressive views. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky outcrops, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Barker Bank is a quieter part of the trail, providing a peaceful contrast to the often-busy Mam Tor.
Continuing along the ridge, you'll make your way to Lose Hill, which stands at 476 meters (1,562 feet). The ascent to Lose Hill is gradual, and the path is well-trodden. Lose Hill offers another excellent vantage point, with views stretching across the Hope Valley and towards Kinder Scout. This is a great spot for a rest and a picnic.
The trail is abundant with wildlife, including skylarks, kestrels, and occasionally red grouse. The flora varies with the seasons, featuring heather, bilberry, and various wildflowers in the summer months. Keep an eye out for the distinctive limestone geology, which supports a unique range of plant species.
The descent from Lose Hill back to Castleton is gentle and follows a series of well-defined paths and tracks. This section of the trail is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and takes you through lush meadows and past ancient dry stone walls. As you approach Castleton, you'll pass by the historic Peveril Castle, a Norman fortification dating back to the 11th century, which is worth a visit if time allows.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
This loop trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding hike for those looking to explore the heart of the Peak District.
