The trail begins at the Mam Tor Car Park, where you will start your ascent towards Mam Tor, also known as the "Shivering Mountain." As you reach the summit of Mam Tor, at an elevation of 517 meters (1,696 feet), you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Peak District. On a clear day, you can see as far as Manchester to the west and the Hope Valley to the east. The summit is marked by a trig point, a popular spot for photos.
From Mam Tor, the trail descends slightly before leading you to the smaller peak of Little Mam Tor. This section of the trail is less steep and offers a more leisurely walk. Little Mam Tor provides equally stunning views and is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery.
The area around Mam Tor is rich in history. The summit of Mam Tor is home to an ancient hill fort dating back to the Bronze Age. The fort's earthworks are still visible today, offering a glimpse into the region's past. Additionally, the old Mam Tor road, which was abandoned due to frequent landslides, can be seen from the trail, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your hike.
The trail is abundant with diverse flora and fauna. In spring and summer, the hillsides are adorned with wildflowers such as heather, bilberry, and various grasses. Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot species like skylarks, meadow pipits, and occasionally, the majestic red kite soaring above.
