Trail Overview

The trail begins at the Heatherdene Car Park, where you can take a moment to enjoy the stunning views of Ladybower Reservoir. As you set off, you'll follow a well-marked path that initially takes you along the reservoir's edge. This section is relatively flat and offers breathtaking views of the water, especially during sunrise or sunset.

Significant Landmarks and Nature

About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the iconic Ladybower Dam. This impressive structure, completed in 1945, is not only an engineering marvel but also a piece of history. During periods of low water, you might even catch a glimpse of the submerged villages of Derwent and Ashopton, which were flooded to create the reservoir.

Continuing along the trail, you'll gradually ascend into the Lockerbrook Coppice. This woodland area is rich in biodiversity, home to various bird species such as woodpeckers and nuthatches. Keep an eye out for deer and other wildlife that frequent the area. The ascent here is moderate, with the trail winding through dense forest, providing a serene and shaded environment.

Historical Significance

Lockerbrook Coppice has a storied past, with remnants of ancient woodlands that date back centuries. The area was historically used for coppicing, a traditional method of woodland management that encourages new growth and maintains biodiversity. As you hike through, you'll notice the diverse plant life, including bluebells in the spring and a variety of fungi in the autumn.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always wise to have a reliable navigation tool. The HiiKER app is highly recommended for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are essential.

Final Stretch

As you descend back towards the reservoir, the trail opens up to more expansive views of the water and surrounding hills. The final 1.5 km (0.9 miles) of the loop brings you back along the reservoir's edge, offering a gentle and scenic conclusion to your hike.

This trail is a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
