To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Hayfield, Derbyshire, where you can find parking near Bowden Bridge Car Park. For those using public transport, take a train to New Mills Central or New Mills Newtown stations, followed by a bus to Hayfield. From Hayfield, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
The trail begins near Kinder Reservoir, a serene body of water that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. As you start your ascent, you'll follow the Snake Path, a historic route established in 1897 by the Peak and Northern Footpaths Society. This path was created to provide public access to the moorlands, a testament to the area's rich history of land rights and public access.
#### Kinder Reservoir to William Clough
The initial stretch takes you along the Kinder Reservoir, offering stunning views of the water and surrounding hills. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach William Clough, a steep and rocky section that requires careful navigation. This part of the trail gains about 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over 1.5 km (0.9 miles).
#### Kinder Scout Plateau
Continuing from William Clough, you'll ascend to the Kinder Scout Plateau, the highest point in the Peak District at 636 meters (2,087 feet). This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) long and gains an additional 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. The plateau offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Edale Valley and the Great Ridge. Be prepared for boggy conditions and use HiiKER for precise navigation.
#### Kinder Downfall
One of the most iconic landmarks on this trail is Kinder Downfall, a 30-meter (98-foot) waterfall that can be particularly dramatic after heavy rainfall. Located approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) into the hike, it's a perfect spot for a break and some photography. The waterfall can sometimes blow back on itself due to strong winds, creating a unique spectacle.
#### Pennine Way to Edale Cross
From Kinder Downfall, the trail intersects with the Pennine Way, a famous long-distance footpath. Follow this path southward for about 3 km (1.9 miles) until you reach Edale Cross, an ancient stone cross marking the historic boundary between the parishes of Edale and Hayfield. This section is relatively flat, offering a respite from the earlier climbs.
#### Descent via Jacob's Ladder
The final major section involves descending via Jacob's Ladder, a well-maintained stone path that leads you back towards Hayfield. This descent covers approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) and drops about 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. The path is steep but offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and hills.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. The moorlands are home to heather, bilberry, and cotton grass, while the woodlands near the reservoir feature oak, birch, and rowan trees. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot red grouse, mountain hares, and peregrine falcons.
The Kinder Scout area is historically significant due to the 1932 Mass Trespass, a pivotal event in the history of public access to the countryside. This act of civil disobedience led to greater public access to private lands and eventually the establishment of national parks in the UK.
As you complete the loop and return to the trailhead near Kinder Reservoir, take a moment to reflect on the diverse landscapes and rich history you've experienced. This trail offers a comprehensive glimpse into the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Peak District, making it a rewarding journey for any hiker.
