“Embark on a captivating 14 km Derbyshire loop blending natural beauty, history, and diverse wildlife.”
Starting your adventure near Derbyshire, England, the Kinder Reservoir, Kinder Downfall, and Kinder Low Loop is a captivating 14 km (8.7 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters (1,969 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and diverse wildlife, making it a must-experience for any avid hiker.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Hayfield, Derbyshire, where you can find parking near Bowden Bridge Car Park. For those using public transport, take a train to New Mills Central Station, followed by a bus to Hayfield. The trailhead is a short walk from the village center.
The loop begins with a gentle ascent along the banks of Kinder Reservoir. This initial section is relatively easy, allowing you to warm up as you enjoy the serene waters and surrounding moorlands. The reservoir itself is a significant landmark, constructed in the early 20th century to supply water to the surrounding areas.
As you continue, the trail becomes steeper, leading you towards Kinder Downfall, the highest waterfall in the Peak District. This section is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) from the start and involves a climb of about 300 meters (984 feet). The waterfall is particularly impressive after heavy rain, with water cascading down the rocky cliffs. Be cautious here, as the rocks can be slippery.
After enjoying the views at Kinder Downfall, the trail takes you onto the Kinder Scout Plateau. This area is known for its rugged terrain and unique rock formations, such as the Wool Packs. The plateau is also historically significant, being the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass, a pivotal event in the campaign for public access to the countryside.
The plateau is home to a variety of wildlife, including red grouse, mountain hares, and the occasional peregrine falcon. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, bilberry, and cotton grass dominating the landscape. Keep an eye out for these as you traverse the plateau.
From the plateau, the trail descends towards Kinder Low, a prominent peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) from Kinder Downfall and involves a descent of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). The views from Kinder Low are breathtaking, providing a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.
The final leg of the loop takes you back towards Hayfield, passing through lush meadows and ancient woodlands. This section is relatively flat and easy, allowing you to cool down as you make your way back to the trailhead. The entire loop should take around 5-6 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the time spent at various landmarks.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking. Ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and sufficient water and snacks. The weather in the Peak District can be unpredictable, so always check the forecast before setting out.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and physical challenge, making it an unforgettable hiking experience.
