To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Hayfield, where parking is available near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in New Mills, about 6 miles (9.6 km) away. From New Mills, you can take a bus to Hayfield, which runs regularly and drops you off close to the starting point of the trail.
The trail begins in Hayfield, a village steeped in history and charm. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the serene beauty of the Peak District National Park. The initial part of the trail takes you along Kinder Road, leading you towards Kinder Reservoir. This section is relatively flat and provides a gentle warm-up before the more challenging parts of the hike.
At approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Kinder Reservoir. This man-made reservoir, constructed in the early 20th century, is a significant landmark in the area. It was built to supply water to the nearby towns and cities and is now a popular spot for walkers and nature enthusiasts. The reservoir is surrounded by lush greenery and offers stunning reflections of the surrounding hills on a calm day.
After taking in the views at Kinder Reservoir, the trail begins to ascend towards Blackshaws. This section is where you'll encounter most of the elevation gain. The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you climb, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Kinder Scout plateau and the surrounding moorlands. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red grouse and mountain hares, which are commonly seen in this area.
Reaching the highest point of the trail at Blackshaws, around 4 km (2.5 miles) in, you'll find yourself on a ridge offering breathtaking views of the valley below. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a snack while soaking in the scenery. The descent from Blackshaws is gradual and takes you through a mix of heather moorland and grassy paths.
The final stretch of the loop brings you back towards Hayfield, passing through picturesque farmland and alongside the River Sett. This section is relatively easy and provides a relaxing end to your hike. As you approach the village, you'll have the opportunity to explore its charming streets, perhaps stopping by a local pub or café to refuel.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. Weather in the Peak District can be unpredictable, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and check the forecast before setting out. The trail can be muddy and slippery after rain, so take care, especially on the steeper sections.
Hayfield and the surrounding area have a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The village itself played a role in the Industrial Revolution, with cotton mills powered by the River Sett. Walking this trail not only offers natural beauty but also a glimpse into the historical tapestry of the region.
This loop trail is a delightful mix of natural beauty, moderate challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
