Starting near the charming village of Hathersage in Derbyshire, England, this 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge. The trailhead is conveniently accessible by both car and public transport. If driving, you can park near the Hathersage train station or in one of the village car parks. For those using public transport, Hathersage is well-served by trains from Sheffield and Manchester, making it an easy destination for a day hike.
Initial Ascent and Higger Tor
The hike begins with a gradual ascent towards Higger Tor, a prominent gritstone tor that stands at an elevation of about 434 meters (1,424 feet). The initial climb is steady but manageable, gaining approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). As you approach Higger Tor, the landscape opens up to reveal sweeping views of the Hope Valley and the surrounding moorlands. This area is rich in heather and bilberry, providing a vibrant display of colors, especially in late summer.
Burbage Rocks and Stanage Edge
Continuing from Higger Tor, the trail leads you along the edge of Burbage Rocks, a popular spot for rock climbers. The path here is relatively flat and easy to navigate, offering stunning vistas of the Derwent Valley. After approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you'll reach Stanage Edge, another iconic gritstone escarpment. Stanage Edge is not only a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance. It was once a boundary marker in the medieval period and has been featured in various literary works, including Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre."
Descending into Hathersage
From Stanage Edge, the trail begins its descent back towards Hathersage. This section is about 5 km (3.1 miles) long and involves a gentle downhill walk through open moorland and pastures. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red grouse, curlews, and occasionally, peregrine falcons. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape, with views of the village and the surrounding countryside becoming more prominent as you approach the end of the loop.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
Hathersage itself is steeped in history. The village is associated with the legend of Robin Hood, and you can visit the grave of Little John in the churchyard of St. Michael's Church.
