“Discover the Hayfield Southern Loop: a scenic 10 km trail blending Peak District beauty and historical intrigue.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Hayfield in Derbyshire, England, the Hayfield Southern Loop is a delightful 10 km (6.2 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (984 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of the Peak District.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Hayfield, which is well-signposted from major roads in the area. If you're using public transport, the nearest train station is in New Mills, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From New Mills, you can catch a local bus to Hayfield, or alternatively, take a taxi for a quicker journey.
The trail begins near the Hayfield Visitor Centre, a convenient starting point where you can gather any last-minute supplies or information. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the rolling hills and lush landscapes that characterize this part of the Peak District.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter Kinder Reservoir. This serene body of water is a great spot for a short break and some photography. The reservoir is surrounded by moorland and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills.
Continuing on, you'll reach Lantern Pike at around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark. This hill, standing at 373 meters (1,224 feet), provides panoramic views of the Peak District. The climb is steady but manageable, and the summit is a rewarding spot for a picnic.
The area around Hayfield has a rich history, particularly related to the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass of 1932. This significant event in the history of the right to roam in the UK took place nearby and is commemorated by various plaques and information boards along the trail.
The trail is abundant with wildlife and plant species. Keep an eye out for red grouse, curlews, and the occasional mountain hare. The moorlands are covered in heather, which blooms beautifully in late summer, adding a splash of purple to the landscape.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time location tracking. Ensure you have appropriate footwear, as the terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain.
As you loop back towards Hayfield, the final 2 km (1.2 miles) offer a gentle descent through farmland and meadows. This section is particularly scenic, with dry stone walls and grazing sheep adding to the quintessentially English countryside experience.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Peak District.
