Grindslow Knoll

The initial ascent takes you up Grindslow Knoll, a prominent hill offering panoramic views of the surrounding Peak District. This section is steep but rewarding, with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet) over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). As you climb, you'll traverse through lush meadows and heather-clad moorlands, home to a variety of bird species such as skylarks and curlews.

Kinder Low

Upon reaching the summit of Grindslow Knoll, the trail levels out as you head towards Kinder Low. This plateau is one of the highest points in the Peak District, standing at 633 meters (2,077 feet) above sea level. The terrain here is rugged and rocky, so sturdy footwear is essential. The views from Kinder Low are spectacular, offering a sweeping vista of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Vale of Edale below.

Kinder Downfall

Continuing along the plateau, you'll arrive at Kinder Downfall, the tallest waterfall in the Peak District. Depending on the season, the waterfall can be a gentle trickle or a dramatic cascade, especially after heavy rainfall. This is a great spot for a break, with the sound of rushing water providing a serene backdrop. The total distance to Kinder Downfall from the trailhead is approximately 7 km (4.3 miles).

Kinder Gates

From Kinder Downfall, the trail leads you to Kinder Gates, a pair of striking rock formations that resemble gateposts. This area is rich in geological history, with millstone grit formations that date back to the Carboniferous period. The path here can be boggy, so be prepared for some muddy sections, especially after rain.

Return to Edale

The descent back to Edale takes you through the picturesque Jacob's Ladder, a steep but well-maintained stone path. This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) long and drops around 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. As you make your way down, you'll pass through ancient woodlands and pastures, often dotted with grazing sheep. The final stretch of the trail brings you back to Edale, completing the loop.
