To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Baslow, where parking is available near the village center. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is in Chesterfield, about 12 miles (19 km) away. From Chesterfield, you can take a bus to Baslow, with services running regularly.
The trail begins near the village of Baslow and quickly ascends towards Gardom's Edge. The initial climb is gentle, allowing you to warm up as you make your way through a mix of open fields and woodland. As you approach Gardom's Edge, the terrain becomes rockier, and the path narrows.
Gardom's Edge is known for its striking gritstone formations and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. At approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the "Three Men" rock formation, a notable landmark that dates back to the Bronze Age. This area is rich in archaeological significance, with ancient rock carvings and remnants of early human settlements.
As you continue along Gardom's Edge, keep an eye out for local wildlife. The area is home to various bird species, including kestrels and skylarks. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, bilberry, and bracken dominating the landscape.
After exploring Gardom's Edge, the trail descends slightly before ascending again towards Birchen Edge. This section is about 2.5 km (1.6 miles) into the hike. The path here is well-marked but can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Birchen Edge is famous for its historical significance, particularly the Nelson Monument, erected in honor of Admiral Lord Nelson. The monument is located near the "Three Ships" rock formations, which are inscribed with the names of Nelson's ships: Victory, Defiance, and Royal Soverin. This area offers stunning views and is a perfect spot for a rest.
The final part of the loop takes you through a mix of heathland and woodland as you descend back towards Baslow. This section is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down as you complete the hike. The entire loop brings you back to your starting point near Baslow, completing a rewarding 5 km journey.
