Nestled in the heart of Derbyshire, England, the Eyam to Great Hucklow Loop offers a captivating journey through history and nature. This 18 km (approximately 11 miles) loop trail begins near the historic village of Eyam, known for its poignant past during the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The trail is moderately challenging, with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (approximately 1,640 feet), making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Eyam, which is accessible via the A623 road. Parking is available in the village, but it can be limited, especially during peak tourist seasons. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Grindleford, about 6 miles (approximately 9.7 km) away. From there, local bus services or a taxi can take you to Eyam.

Historical Significance

Eyam, often referred to as the "Plague Village," is steeped in history. In 1665, the village famously quarantined itself to prevent the spread of the plague, a story that resonates through its preserved cottages and the Eyam Museum. As you begin your hike, take a moment to explore the village and its historical landmarks, including the Eyam Parish Church and the Plague Cottages.

Trail Highlights

The trail meanders through the picturesque Derbyshire countryside, offering a mix of open fields, woodlands, and charming villages. As you leave Eyam, the path ascends gently, providing panoramic views of the surrounding hills. At approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the boundary of the Peak District National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native bird species such as skylarks and curlews, especially in the open moorland sections. The woodlands are rich with oak and ash trees, and during spring, the ground is often carpeted with bluebells.

Midway Point: Great Hucklow

Around the halfway mark, you'll arrive at the quaint village of Great Hucklow. This is an ideal spot to rest and perhaps enjoy a meal at one of the local pubs. The village is known for its gliding club, and on a clear day, you might see gliders soaring above the hills.

Navigational Tips

As you continue the loop back towards Eyam, the trail can become less distinct in places, particularly in the open fields. It's advisable to use the HiiKER app for accurate navigation and to ensure you stay on track. The app provides detailed maps and real-time location tracking, which can be invaluable in this rural setting.

Final Stretch

The final stretch of the trail descends gently back into Eyam, offering a chance to reflect on the journey and the historical tapestry of the region. Before concluding your hike, consider visiting the Eyam Hall, a Jacobean-style manor house that offers further insights into the area's rich heritage.

This loop trail not only provides a rewarding physical challenge but also immerses you in the cultural and natural beauty of Derbyshire, making it a memorable experience for any hiker.
