Key Sections and Landmarks

Cromford Canal

The initial section of the trail follows the Cromford Canal. This serene waterway is home to a variety of wildlife, including ducks, swans, and occasionally kingfishers. The canal path is relatively flat, making for an easy start to your hike. After approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you'll leave the canal and begin a gentle ascent.

Middleton Top

As you climb towards Middleton Top, the elevation gain becomes more noticeable. This section of the trail offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Middleton Top is a historical landmark featuring a well-preserved engine house from the Cromford and High Peak Railway. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

Sheep Pasture Incline

Continuing from Middleton Top, you'll encounter the Sheep Pasture Incline, a steep but short section that will test your endurance. The incline is part of the old railway route and offers a glimpse into the engineering feats of the past. After conquering the incline, the trail levels out, providing a more relaxed walk through open fields and woodlands.

Flora and Fauna

The trail is rich in biodiversity. In the woodlands, you might spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The fields are often dotted with wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for bluebells, primroses, and the occasional orchid.
