To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Castleton, Derbyshire, where ample parking is available. The trail begins near the famous Blue John Cavern, a historic site known for its unique Blue John stone, a rare form of fluorite. The cavern itself is worth a visit before or after your hike. As you start the loop, you'll ascend gradually, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Peak District.
At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll reach Barker Bank. This section provides a gentle climb and is a great spot to observe local flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for wildflowers in the spring and summer months, and you might even spot some local wildlife like red grouse or mountain hares.
Continuing on, you'll approach Back Tor at approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike. This is one of the more challenging sections with a steeper ascent, but the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the Edale Valley and Kinder Scout. The rocky outcrops here are perfect for a short break and some photography.
The trail then leads you to Lose Hill, around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark. This peak offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, including Mam Tor and the Great Ridge. Lose Hill is steeped in history, with ancient earthworks and remnants of old settlements visible along the way.
From Lose Hill, the trail descends back towards Castleton. The descent is gradual, allowing you to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Peak District. You'll pass through lush meadows and might encounter grazing sheep, a common sight in this region.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but weather conditions can change rapidly, so always be prepared with appropriate gear.
The area around Castleton is rich in history. The Blue John Cavern has been mined for centuries, and the village of Castleton itself dates back to the 11th century. The ruins of Peveril Castle, built by William Peveril, a follower of William the Conqueror, are also nearby and worth a visit.
This loop trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast exploring the Peak District.
