To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the Whinlatter Forest Park, where you can find parking facilities. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Keswick. From Keswick, you can take a local bus to Whinlatter Forest Park, which is well-connected and offers a convenient starting point for your hike.
The trail begins near the Whinlatter Forest Park Visitor Centre. As you set off, you'll be greeted by a well-marked path that winds through dense woodland, offering a serene start to your hike. The initial section is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up before the more challenging ascents.
After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll start the ascent towards Barf. This section is steeper and requires careful footing, especially if the ground is wet. The climb rewards you with stunning views of Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells. Keep an eye out for the "Bishop's Rock," a notable landmark that has historical significance. Legend has it that a bishop once fell to his death here, adding a touch of local lore to your journey.
Continuing from Barf, the trail leads you towards Lords Seat, the highest point of the loop at 552 meters (1,811 feet). The climb is steady but manageable, and the panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Scottish Borders. This is an excellent spot for a break, allowing you to take in the expansive vistas and perhaps enjoy a packed lunch.
The area is rich in wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels, deer, and a variety of bird species. The flora is equally impressive, with ancient oak trees and a carpet of bluebells in the spring. The diverse ecosystem makes this trail a haven for nature enthusiasts.
The descent from Lords Seat is gradual and takes you through more woodland areas. After about 6 km (3.7 miles) into the hike, you'll re-enter the forest, where the path becomes less steep and more relaxed. This section is a great opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of the forest and perhaps spot some more wildlife.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
The region around Cumberland and Keswick is steeped in history. The trail itself passes through areas that have been walked for centuries, and the nearby Whinlatter Forest has a rich history dating back to the Roman times.
