Out and Back
“The Long Side Peak Walk near Cumberland offers invigorating hikes with stunning vistas and historical intrigue.”
Starting near the charming town of Cumberland in England, the Long Side Peak Walk is an invigorating out-and-back trail that spans approximately 7 kilometers (around 4.3 miles) with an elevation gain of about 500 meters (1,640 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a rewarding challenge for outdoor enthusiasts.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the town of Keswick, which is well-signposted from major roads. From Keswick, follow the A591 towards Bassenthwaite Lake. The nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the Ravenstone Hotel, located along the A591. There is limited parking available near the hotel, so arriving early is advisable.
For those using public transport, take a train to Penrith, which is the nearest major railway station. From Penrith, you can catch a bus (Stagecoach service X4/X5) towards Keswick and alight at the Ravenstone Hotel stop. The trailhead is a short walk from there.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush woodlands, where you might spot native wildlife such as red squirrels and various bird species. After approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles), the path starts to steepen as you leave the forest behind and enter open moorland. Here, the views begin to open up, offering stunning vistas of Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells.
The area around Long Side Peak is steeped in history. The Lake District has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the landscape is dotted with ancient stone circles and remnants of early settlements. The nearby town of Keswick has a rich mining history, particularly for graphite, which was used in the production of pencils—a fact commemorated by the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick.
Given the open moorland and ridge walking, it's essential to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Use HiiKER for accurate trail maps and real-time updates. Ensure you have appropriate clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and sufficient water and snacks. The trail is well-marked, but a map and compass are always recommended as a backup.
The trail offers a chance to see a variety of wildlife, including red deer and peregrine falcons. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, bilberry, and various wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape, especially in late summer.
The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead, allowing you to enjoy the views from a different perspective. The descent can be steep in places, so take your time and watch your footing.
By the time you complete the Long Side Peak Walk, you'll have experienced some of the best that the Lake District has to offer, from its natural beauty to its rich history.
