“Embark on a challenging yet rewarding 12 km hike through stunning vistas and rich history in Buttermere.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Buttermere in Cumberland, England, the Knott Rigg, Ard Crags, Grasmoor, and Whiteless Pike Loop via Newlands Pass offers a challenging yet rewarding hike. This 12 km (7.5 miles) loop with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 meters (3280 feet) is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for experienced hikers looking for a full day of adventure.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Buttermere, where limited parking is available. If using public transport, the nearest major town is Keswick, from where you can take a bus to Buttermere. The bus service is relatively infrequent, so check the schedule in advance.
The hike begins near Newlands Pass, a scenic spot that offers stunning views right from the start. As you ascend Knott Rigg, you'll gain about 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). The path is well-trodden but can be steep and rocky in sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
From Knott Rigg, the trail continues to Ard Crags, a relatively gentle ridge walk that spans approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles). This section offers panoramic views of the Newlands Valley and the surrounding fells. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and various bird species like the peregrine falcon.
The Newlands Valley has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age. The area was also significant during the medieval period for its mining activities, particularly for lead and copper. As you hike, you may notice remnants of old mining operations, adding a historical dimension to your journey.
The trail then descends slightly before a steep climb up to Grasmoor, the highest point of the hike at 852 meters (2795 feet). This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) long and involves an elevation gain of around 400 meters (1312 feet). The summit of Grasmoor offers breathtaking 360-degree views, including sights of Crummock Water and the distant peaks of the Lake District.
From Grasmoor, the trail descends towards Whiteless Pike, a distance of about 2 km (1.2 miles) with a descent of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This section can be quite steep and slippery, especially after rain, so take care. Whiteless Pike offers another excellent vantage point, with views extending towards Buttermere and beyond.
The final leg of the hike involves a descent back towards Buttermere, covering around 3.5 km (2.2 miles) with a descent of about 300 meters (984 feet). The path here is less steep but can be rocky and uneven. As you make your way down, you'll pass through lush meadows and small streams, offering a peaceful end to your hike.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the correct path.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora, including heather, bilberry, and various wildflowers, especially vibrant in the spring and summer months. The area is also home to a range of wildlife, from red deer to the elusive mountain hare.
This loop trail offers a mix of challenging ascents, rewarding summits, and historical intrigue, making it a must-do for any avid hiker exploring the Lake District.
