Trail Overview

The loop begins with a steady ascent from Glenridding, leading you through lush green pastures and offering early glimpses of the surrounding fells. As you climb, the path becomes rockier and more rugged, requiring sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness.

Helvellyn Summit

At around the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) mark, you'll reach the summit of Helvellyn, standing at 950 meters (3,117 feet). This is the third-highest peak in England and offers panoramic views of the Lake District, including Ullswater to the northeast and Thirlmere to the west. Lower Man and White Side

From Helvellyn, the trail descends slightly before climbing again to Lower Man, which is about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) away. This section is less steep but still requires careful footing. Continuing on, you'll reach White Side, another prominent peak that offers equally stunning views. This part of the trail is less crowded, providing a more serene hiking experience.

Raise

Keep an eye out for red deer, which are often seen grazing in the early morning or late afternoon. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting species like the peregrine falcon and the golden eagle.

Historical Significance

The Lake District has a rich history, and this trail is no exception. Helvellyn has been a popular destination for centuries, attracting poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The area is also steeped in mining history, particularly around Raise, where remnants of old lead mines can still be seen.
