The initial part of the trail takes you through lush green pastures and gradually ascends towards Haycock. This section is relatively moderate, allowing you to warm up before the steeper climbs. As you ascend, you'll pass through areas rich in native flora, including heather and bilberry bushes. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and various bird species like the peregrine falcon.
Upon reaching Haycock, the trail continues towards Great Scoat Fell. This segment offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. The terrain becomes rockier, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The elevation gain here is more pronounced, and you'll be climbing to an altitude of approximately 802 meters (2,631 feet). The summit of Great Scoat Fell provides a perfect spot for a brief rest and some breathtaking photography.
From Great Scoat Fell, the trail leads you to Red Pike, another significant peak in the region. The path here is well-trodden but can be slippery in wet conditions, so caution is advised. Red Pike stands at an elevation of 826 meters (2,710 feet) and offers stunning views of Ennerdale Water and the surrounding landscape. This area is also rich in geological history, with visible layers of ancient sedimentary rock.
The descent from Red Pike takes you back towards Wast Water, completing the loop. This section is less strenuous but requires careful navigation, especially in foggy conditions. Using a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER can be invaluable here. The trail winds through picturesque valleys and alongside babbling brooks, offering a peaceful end to your hike.
The region around Wast Water is steeped in history. Wasdale Head is often referred to as the birthplace of British rock climbing, with many pioneering ascents taking place on the nearby crags. Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of wildlife and plant species. The higher elevations are home to hardy alpine plants, while the lower valleys are lush with ferns and wildflowers. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diversity of avian life, including buzzards, kestrels, and the occasional golden eagle.
