This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of historical intrigue, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife, making it a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Hardknott Pass, one of the steepest roads in England, which is accessible from the A593. The nearest significant landmark is the Hardknott Roman Fort, located at the western end of the pass. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Ambleside, from where you can take a bus to the Hardknott Pass area. Be sure to check the latest bus schedules as services can be infrequent.
The trail begins near the Hardknott Roman Fort, an ancient site dating back to the 2nd century AD. This fort was built by the Romans to guard the pass and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's historical significance. From here, the trail ascends gradually, providing panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys.
The initial section of the trail takes you through rugged terrain as you ascend towards Harter Fell. This part of the hike is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) with an elevation gain of about 300 meters (985 feet). The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you climb, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Eskdale Valley and the distant peaks of the Lake District.
Reaching the summit of Harter Fell, which stands at 653 meters (2,142 feet), is a highlight of the hike. The summit offers 360-degree views, including the Scafell range to the north and the Duddon Valley to the south. This is an excellent spot for a break and some photography. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red deer and various bird species that inhabit the area.
From Harter Fell, the trail descends towards Green Crag, covering a distance of about 3 km (1.9 miles) with a descent of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This section is less steep but can be boggy in places, especially after rain. The landscape here is characterized by heather moorland and scattered rocky outcrops. Green Crag itself is a distinctive feature, offering another excellent vantage point.
The final leg of the loop takes you back towards Hardknott Pass, completing the remaining 5 km (3.1 miles) of the trail. This section is relatively gentle, with a mix of descending and flat terrain. Along the way, you'll pass through ancient woodlands and open moorland, providing a diverse range of scenery. The trail eventually leads you back to the starting point near the Hardknott Roman Fort.
Given the varied terrain and potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Ensure you have a map and compass as backup, and always check the weather forecast before setting out. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
The trail is rich in natural beauty, with a variety of flora and fauna to observe. In spring and summer, the heather moorlands are in full bloom, creating a vibrant purple landscape. You may also encounter red squirrels, a species native to the area, and a variety of birdlife, including peregrine falcons and buzzards.
