“Embark on a 15 km Lake District loop from Seathwaite, blending moderate ascents, stunning vistas, and historical intrigue.”
Starting your adventure near Cumberland, England, this 15 km (approximately 9.3 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (2,625 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available near Seathwaite, a small hamlet in Borrowdale. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Seatoller, which is about a 1.5 km (1 mile) walk from the trailhead.
The journey begins with a steady ascent towards Glaramara, a prominent fell in the Lake District. The initial climb is steep, gaining around 400 meters (1,312 feet) in the first 3 km (1.9 miles). The path is well-trodden but can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you ascend, take in the panoramic views of the Borrowdale Valley and Derwent Water.
Continuing from Glaramara, the trail leads you to Red Beck Top. This section is less steep but involves some scrambling over rocky terrain. The path here is less defined, so using a navigation tool like HiiKER is advisable. After approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) from the start, you'll reach Allen Crags. This area is known for its rugged beauty and offers stunning views of the surrounding fells, including Great Gable and Scafell Pike.
From Allen Crags, the trail descends towards Styhead Tarn, a picturesque mountain lake situated at around 450 meters (1,476 feet) elevation. This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) and involves a descent of approximately 350 meters (1,148 feet). The tarn is a popular spot for a rest, with clear waters and a backdrop of towering peaks. It's also a historical waypoint, as it lies on the old packhorse route between Borrowdale and Wasdale.
The final leg of the loop takes you back to Seathwaite, following the path along Styhead Gill. This descent is more gradual, covering around 4 km (2.5 miles) with an elevation loss of about 200 meters (656 feet). The path is well-marked and offers views of the cascading gill and lush green valleys. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and various bird species.
The Lake District has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. The area around Borrowdale was historically significant for its mining activities, particularly for graphite, which was used in the production of pencils. The landscape itself has inspired countless poets and writers, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.
To reach the trailhead by car, navigate to Seathwaite in Borrowdale. Parking is available, but it can get crowded, especially during peak seasons. If using public transport, take a bus to Seatoller and walk the remaining 1.5 km (1 mile) to Seathwaite. Ensure you check the bus schedules in advance, as services can be infrequent.
This loop trail offers a blend of challenging ascents, stunning landscapes, and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
